Community Building and Information

Thursday, November 18, 2021
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Abstract: The word "community" can be fraught; it can apply to different contexts and have strikingly personal meanings. A simple way to think about community is any group of people with common interests. But what does community have to do with information practices? Community development is its own practice, with a powerful ethical framework and practical toolkit that can prove valuable to increasing the profile, transparency, and support network of any information enterprise.

Over the course of a three-year grant, archivists at the Rose Library at Emory University engaged in community-building training that led to a transformation of outreach and engagement practices. As the new Director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Columbia University, our speaker plans to implement a program of capacity building that will capitalize on her own experiences. This session will explore how people-centered practices can be married to information practices, lessons learned from years of community building, and how the future of information lies in people as much as technology.

Speaker Bio: Courtney Chartier is the Director of the Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Columbia University. Prior to her position at Columbia, Courtney worked as the Head of Research Services at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, & Rare Book Library at Emory University, and the Archives Research Center of the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library where she lived out two dreams: processing the papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the papers of Tupac Shakur. Courtney was the 2014 President of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA), and is currently the 76th President of the Society of American Archivists (SAA). Courtney attended the University of Texas (BA, American Studies; MS, Information Studies) and the University of Mississippi (MA, Southern Studies).
